As far as hobbies go, it is no secret that yoga is a pretty low-maintenance activity. At the most basic level, a membership to a gym or yoga studio should cover the required tools. If you are striving to become a true yogi, however, but still want to pamper the bank account, you can limit the essentials to one item, a comfortable and supportive yoga mat. As a novice, this purchase can be a daunting task. The yoga mat market is chalked full of dozens of styles, varying in texture, grip, thickness and so on.
I am a true believer in researching a product prior to swiping my credit card. Your yoga mat will become your best friend each time you enter class. You will sit, stand and recline on it. In no time, you will begin to rely on it for support and look to it for comfort when the going gets tough. In other words, it’s a purchase that should not be made haphazardly or without some degree of thought and consideration.

Yoga benefits you by keeping you calm and serene. You learn to control your breathing and use breathing to help you relax. This is very beneficial to helping you through the childbirth process. Asana is the word for a posture or a pose in yoga. According to Patanjali, an asana means to be seated in a firm but relaxed position. The word was originally Sanskrit for ‘sitting posture’, which is asanam as ‘sitting’ and aste as ‘he sits’. However, in more modern use the asanas are more than simply sitting postures, and may also include postures lying on the back, and postures in various other positions, including standing on the head! Asanas are also commonly referred to as Yogasana, or yoga asana as well when they are used as part of yoga practice.

Hatha Yoga, which is also known as Hatha Vidya, is a particular style of Yoga, which was first introduced in 15th century India by Yogi Swatmarama. Yogi Swatmarama compiled the Hatha Yoga Prakipika, which is where he introduces the practice of Hatha Yoga as a stairway to the absolute heights of Raja Yoga. He believed Hatha Yoga to be a preparatory stage of total physical purification, which is capable of rendering the body completely fit for the practice of much higher meditation. The asana and the Pranayama in Raja Yoga were the original form of Yoga practiced by Hindu Yogis who planned to physically train themselves for longer periods of meditation. This particular practice is known as shatkarma.

Bikram Yoga is a style of yoga that is also commonly referred to as Hot Yoga. Bikram Yoga was developed by a man named Bikram Choudhury and has origins in the Yoga College of India in Mumbai, India. Bikram Yoga’s popularity has grown in the mainstream quite a bit since the late twentieth century. What sets Bikram yoga apart from other styles of yoga practice is the fact that Bikram yoga is practiced in a room of at least 105 degrees Fahrenheit with a humidity of around 40-percent. A specific dialogue, including two different breathing exercises, and twenty-six postures, guides the Bikram yoga class. A Bikram yoga course typically lasts around ninety minutes, and involves students from all practice levels, ages, body types and walks of life. Bikram Yoga is a type of beginner yoga, which means that practically anyone can enjoy it with little to no experience.
