Even if you do not necessarily practice yoga on a regular basis, there are a number of yoga props which you can benefit greatly from, especially if you are a beginner to yoga, or still exploring the various styles of yoga in an attempt to find the one you prefer the most. Here is a brief introduction to the more common yoga props, as well as how they are generally used when it comes to yoga practice.?

Yoga Mats - Yoga Mats, which are also known as sticky mats, are responsible for providing a yoga practice surface which is lightly cushioned and slip-proof. They work best on smooth, flat floors like tile or laminate. The sticky surface can easily be cleaned, and the mats generally roll up for easy portability. Basic yoga mats tend to only run you around $20 or so, which makes them well worth the investment if you are looking for a prop which will allow you to better hold your postures.

Yoga Blocks - These blocks or bricks make it possible to remain in proper form when your flexibility or strength does not allow it. Blocks tend to be rectangular in shape, allowing them to be used on all sides for three different height types.

Yoga Wedges - Wedges are triangular shaped yoga blocks which prevent over stretching while providing extra support. These wedges can be used underneath the heels, the hips or the palms or wrists for sitting, standing and squatting poses.

Yoga Straps or Belts - These yoga straps and belts are great when it comes to aiding in flexibility for beginners. Holding a strap with both of your hands will allow you to better stay in a pose. These work well for seated stretches, standing poses that involve balancing on a single leg, and for general flexibility training as well.

It is truly simple to incorporate all of these yoga props directly into your workout. As long as you keep them within reach, you can easily bring these tools into your workout. Most of these props are furnished by yoga studios, or you can purchase your own from most fitness stores. If you are a beginner yoga practitioner, these yoga props can prove to be extremely useful in easing you into the more difficult poses. They are a great addition for any home practice, or you can bring them with you to a yoga class or the gym.
