Most people who practice yoga on a regular basis will admit that it can give you a great ego-boost– making you feel better about your body as you become stronger and more flexible, tone your muscles, reduce stress, and improve your mental and physical well-being. But the question many yoga-curious individuals have is will it help you lose weight? What most people who have been successful at healthful weight loss with yoga know, is that one must also begin and maintain a lifestyle of moderation, exercise (in this case, yoga) and healthy food choices.

Practicing any of the numerous types of yoga will build physical strength and help to tone and reshape the body, but some types may not raise your heart rate enough to make them the only form of exercise you need to include in your weight loss regime. It depends on the type of yoga you select and how frequently you practice it. Some types of yoga, such as lyengar wherein yoga poses are held for a number of minutes with rest in between each pose, will build muscles and improve your posture.

Building muscle will raise your metabolic rate and keep you burning calories but these types of yoga may not give you the cardiovascular workout you need to your healthy goal weight. But that is not to say that yoga cannot be used as a method of weight reduction and maintenance; from the Hollywood celebrities to stay at home mom’s, yoga has been a favorite way to break out of work-out ruts and reinvigorate  a weight loss plan or gym routine.

Those who succeed with yoga generally as their main type of exercise have found they get best results when they do a vigorous, 90-minute yoga class at least three times a week. Vinyasa is a great style of yoga for weight loss, including many popular, athletic, sweat-drenched yoga styles. For weight loss purposes, try these types of yoga: Ashtanga Yoga, Power Yoga and Hot Yoga.
