Yoga can vastly improve both mental and physical health. Many men are surprised to learn that they can benefit from yoga practice just as easily as women can. Yoga can help men improve their ability to cope in the work place, which can help them to remove stress from their lives. Yoga can also help to create space between one’s thoughts, which makes it possible to better enjoy your life.
For many men, the idea of taking a yoga class or even practicing at home can be quite daunting. There will always be more women practicing yoga than men, and because the male mind is traditionally so competitive, they may have difficulty sticking to their yoga practice if they do not take to it as easily as they had imagined. After all, many people believe yoga to be an “easy practice” and do not realize how much hard work truly goes into some of the asanas, or poses. So what if you feel a little silly, doing yoga in a room full of women? Who cares what your friends think? The main thing to consider when looking into adopting a yoga practice for yourself is: What can Yoga do for you? Will you benefit from its practice? If the answer to this question is yes, then push the other questions and worries aside and explore everything that Yoga has to offer you, no matter what gender you are.
Yoga is capable of complementing a large number of other exercise programs and disciplines and sports. Many people view yoga to be a form of exercise, but what it truly is, is the science of positive physical and mental health. Yoga is a practice that can be utilized for a wide variety of different health-related needs, as it is capable of building your strength, your stamina and your flexibility in a way that is balanced and complete. Yoga is also capable of reducing stressors and increasing one’s energy, both which can lead to improved sleep and an improved over all sense of well-being.
Yoga is not simply a version of slow aerobics. What makes yoga so challenging and so unique is the mental challenge that comes with working with the breath and the body simultaneously. Many people breathe incorrectly without ever knowing it. Men habitually breathe from their chest, which is actually capable of increasing levels of stress, blood pressure and anxiety as well. There are a great number of different benefits which come from full abdominal breathing, including increased levels of energy and a better sense of focus. Better health may be a few correct breaths away.
