According to a study which was completed by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, there are approximately sixty million Americans who are having trouble sleeping. Many of these people have turned to medication as a last result, but this is because they are not aware of a couple of other options that they have. What many people do not realize is that exercises in relaxation and meditation can have a profound effect on treating insomnia.

According to a new study which was recently completed by the Division of Sleep Medicine in the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Harvard Medical School has recently determined that yoga may be able to help alleviate insomnia because it incorporates both meditation and relaxation techniques. They conducted a study involving twenty different patients with histories of insomnia, and each patient received an in-person training session which taught them how to perform popular yoga poses. These patients practiced every single day for a period of eight weeks, and kept a sleep diary to track their experiences with sleeping every night. The study has shown that a number of different participants noticed significant improvements in five or more different sleep quality measures.

The participants in this study received yoga training on a one on one basis, but this does not mean that you have to hire an expensive private instructor if you want to get better sleep. There are a lot of outlets which will allow you to brush up on your yoga skills, so you may consider joining a yoga class at your local gym, renting or purchasing a couple of instructional yoga videos, or just buying a book with easy to follow diagrams. Whichever way you choose, yoga is generally very easy to learn and to adapt to your own skill level and needs. There are plenty of comprehensive websites available on the internet, which teach beginner’s yoga from start to finish. Yoga has a great number of benefits, including helping to increase your flexibility and your muscle tone in addition to improving the quality of your sleep.

Yoga may not solve all sleep issues and disorders, but this is because there is a multitude of different causes, some of which may be underlying health issues. Sleep disorders are also capable of escalating into more serious health problems, so speak to a doctor before you try to treat your sleep disorders on your own.
